I've been absent for the past few weeks, just wanted to throw a couple of things out there...
1. The profile on Bernard Herrmann was absolutely spectacular.
2. I really enjoyed the scope of this current episode. That topic immediately brought to mind the "Mr. Hollands Opus" style melodramas but yeah, Mars Attacks.

I liked the idea of this episode and thought I would add A Clockwork Orange. Music is essential to understanding Alex as a character and the radical change of how Alex views music in the third act of the film.
It's also worth commenting on the use of Singin' in the Rain in the rape sequence. Alex singing the song is terrifying because it's incongruous with the act he's performing. Considering the lyrics are about being happy (and in love) despite terrible circumstances, it fits Alex's circumstances. Although he inhabits a dark and awful world, Alex is a pretty happy guy and seems to find joy in the world. The song is an evil choice because it's requesting Alex's victims find happiness in the misery he's creating.

Yikes, it's things like that which have always made me hesitant to watch the movie. I'll get to it eventually but yeah, yikes.
It's definitely a theme used in all sorts of movies but that inspirational drama about the power of music, it's almost its own genre. It's really all my uncreative mind keeps jumping to; you've got Mr. Hollands Opus, The Soloist, Music of the Heart, 8 Mile, Once... I'm positive there's more.

I thought it was Feral My Concubine. Like a personal sexual servant gone rabid.
Good episode, I think the topic can be revisited with mediums such as film or books.

If I'm remembering correctly it was "Farrel My Concubine" then "Feral My Concubine" and another one that roped in Whit Stillman.. or Slim Whitman.. I've gone crazy.
I was thinking about how an episode about "the transformative power of film" might work but I think it might make more sense to do an episode on "films about film." The only two I can think of that fit the first category are Day for Night and Cinema Paradiso.
Lastly: I also got a kick out of that weird "we're back" voice he did in the last episode!
