I just finished reading the book and I must say I was shocked to discover Petyr and Ser Rodrik were secret gay lovers all along. Also, the part about Bran and Twyn actually being the same person with a split personality was handled pretty well, in my opinion. The real kicker, though, was the twist ending that revealed everything that transpires in the book actually takes place years in the future when apes have taken over the entire planet. It blew my mind.

Ha, I was going to start this myself.
I'm not ashamed to say that I didn't really like the pilot. It didn't have any hook apart from fancy HBO production values.

Have seen the first 8 episodes, and am done. I really dislike this show. Its just seems to try so hard to be 'shocking', but the pace is so mind-numbing, and the show makes no effort to make me care about anything that happens to these people. This entire first season has enough plot for the first 10 minutes of a fantasy film.

I really love this show! Along with Breaking Bad, it's probably my favourite show on TV at the moment. It's fantasy, but it's closer to something like Elizabeth (1998), than Lord of the Rings. The supernatural elements are almost peripheral to the main narrative, which is all about the political machinations, etc. of the realm.
After season 1 finished, I toar through all 5 books within a couple of months. The casting in the show is fantastic. All the main actors were brilliant and lead some much needed credibility to the world with their performances. Some scenes are actually done better than in the book, and add some depth to the characters. Like the conversation between Robert and Cersei in episode 5. The acting is just so good for a TV show. Better than most films. Anyway, I can't wait till season 2 comes out in April.

This entire first season has enough plot for the first 10 minutes of a fantasy film. I would say try reading the books but I'm not convinced you'd have the patience for it. As to it being "shocking", it's based on novels. I'd never, ever call the books shocking. The story takes place in a universe that is realistic despite its fantastical elements. When someone is captured and thrown in jail in this universe there's no ridiculous heroic escapes and the protagonists are in actual peril. People die, people back stab, people act selfishly, people have sex, people do wicked things, people do injust things. Just like real life. The show is never "shocking" for the sake of being so, it mirrors the way the real world works. Sometimes the good guys don't win.
