I'm sure everyone (that is everyone who still hangs around these parts!) has got an opinion on the summer movie slate, especially given the enormous amount of superhero movies headed our way. I guess in addition to responding to the episode we can make this the general summer movie thread. I haven't finished the episode but there's a few things that stand out to me as worth mentioning.
1. If there were any new listeners I could imagine them being frustrated by Josh Fadem's dismissive attitude (don't care, piece of trash, booo-ring) though having heard him on the show and knowing what to expect from a supplement I've been laughing at it all the way through. It's not an entirely unfounded opinion either (too many superheroes!) but in his frustration he neglects a few studio movies (Super 8 comes to mind) that should be championed for being, at the very least, just as much about the creativity as the money.
2. Really, not looking forward to X-Men: First Class? I guess if you didn't enjoy Kick Ass I can see the dismissing this but the concept seems fun-- even if they are trying way too hard to connect it to the original three movies.
3. I just listened you talk about Project Nim: documentaries seem like foreign films in that the general movie going public enjoys getting excited about one, maybe two a year. It seems like maybe they're trying to promote this movie as the next Man on Wire-- recapture that small spark?

I'm a long-time listener and I'm frustrated by Josh Fadem. I love (and by love, I mean hate) his constant asking if a movie has CG in it; it makes be think of somebody in 1975 asking if a movie has bluescreen effects in it. Josh, if you read this, please note: special effects are neutral, they can be used either poorly or well. Why not harp on whether a film has swearing in it, or shows people drinking carbonated beverages, or depicts maps?
But then Fadem says something trenchant about 'Killer of Sheep.' I just don't understand him at all.

Still, it's difficult not to see where he's coming from: that mentality "we'll make money whether or not the movie's good" is one of the most frustrating things about studio cinema and cheap CGI only bolsters the notion that studios don't care about quality. I mean don't get me wrong, his dismissive comments were mostly unmerited, I'm just saying I too have a tricky relationship with big-budget studio cinema.
In other news: I am a nazi.

I love the concept of X-Men First Class (a super-hero period piece during the bay of pigs) and Matthew Vaughan is a good directoral choice, but I just can't excited about it. I'm not sure why, but nothing really grabbed me yet. Still, I'm optimistic about it and might check it out (though I'll probably see Green Lantern over X-Men. The first GL trailer left me cold but the comicon footage that takes place on Oa got me quite excited).

Dr. Handsome, I totally agree with you (and Josh) about the mentality of big studios. I'm sick of having to wade through piles of horrible, stupid movies for the chance to see quality ones. I think, however, that focusing on big budgets and CGI is missing the point; we should be railing against lousy scripts, lazy directors and risk-averse execs.
By the way, I am very much looking forward to X-Men: First Class. I hope this doesn't end up contradicting my point above.
In other, other news: that provocation did not have a purpose.

In other, other news: that provocation did not have a purpose. I can't tell whether you're referring to the incident itself as meaningless or my dumb joke meaningless or whether you just missed the reference altogether. Either way, Kirsten Dunst's reaction is priceless. With regards to your first comment: that's exactly how I feel and yes it was dumb of him to seemingly dismiss an entire genre.

I was referring to the incident. Afterwards Von Trier said "I'm known for provocations, but I like provocations when they have a purpose." Basically, I was stumped for something clever to say.

Ha, I didn't hear him say that-- was that his response?
I think Bridesmaids will be my first real summer movie.

It was part of a longer statement he made. It may have been before he was persona-non-grata'ed.
