Well, it looks like ol' Blockbuster Video is on its way out. Certainly, we've been saying this for the last four years or so, but it's looking like it's going to happen even sooner than we thought. I will refer you to the L.A. Times article below. tinyurl.com/ykx66y9As somebody that used to work for Blockbuster, I feel a certain degree of joy that the company is going under. However, as somebody who still enjoys going out to a video store and taking my sweet time picking out a movie, I am saddened. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know that I'm a sucker for sentimentality and nostalgia, but I'm really going to miss the experience of going to Blockbuster with my friends (or wife) and renting a couple movies. What do you guys think about this? Are you happy or sad about the slow death of Blockbuster?

I shouldn't have bought all that Blockbuster stock last month...
Seriously, with Netflix doing as strong as it is, especially with streaming through X-Box and PS3, this isn't a surprise. They didn't adapt quick enough for the internet. If they had introduced streaming movies faster than Netflix maybe they'd have a battle going, but the internet takes yet another casualty.
The real question is, how long before the internet kills magazines and DVDs? It'll suck when I have to carry a damn I-Pad with me to the crapper (pardon the vulgarity).

Personally I too am nostalgic of the times going to the video store, and spending well over an hour picking a movie out, with arguments, heated discussions and all. The death of Blockbuster makes me all the happier though since they were the ones that killed the local mom-and-pop video store who I was extremely loyal to. Good riddance to the corporate giant who wiped out a great local business, thanks to exclusive deals with studios and overly aggressive pricing.

This is just the sort of nostalgic corner of the internet I need right now: I just moved from my childhood home and while the place was a whole mess of problems and while I'm looking forward to months of growth and opportunity and change I can't help but feel a little homesick.
My local Blockbuster closed a couple of years ago and while it wasn't your friendly neighborhood rental store it was the only place to rent movies. It probably plays some part in why I enjoy movies and would kill to make a living making them someday.
It makes me remember my mom reluctantly allowing me to watch The Virgin Suicides and enthusiastically picking out a free rental on Tuesdays and seeing an almost daunting wall of old and new movies and wondering how I could ever see them all.

The BlockBuster in our town shut down right after Christmas.

I come from a small city, so the problem I have with the local video store is this: only one of them has older movies. I find it's rather hard to find classics at my local stores and it really bugs me. Luckily, there is one that has some classics, but I get the feeling that when most converted to DVDs, they were only using the ones that were just coming out.
