I feel this is more of a different topic, rather than a list of favorite movies. This allows people to select 5 movies from various genres that would have been overlooked in other lists. These are my 5 movies.
This may seem like a different way to list favorite movies, but these are movies that I believe everyone should see.
Unfortunately, I did not include Battleship Potemkin or Triumph of the Will (but I would give both of these 10 stars on IMDB).
Citizen Kane (of course) M (my favorite foreign film) The Wizard of Oz (a classic) Modern Times (Chaplin's best, [yes, better than City Lights]) Back to the Future (A modern classic)
My runner-ups would be: Sherlock Jr. (a classic Buster Keaton) Groundhog Day (the best romantic-comedy since "It Happened One Night") A Christmas Carol (Christmas isn't Christmas without a Red Rydrer BB gun) Rear Window (Vertigo is not the best classic thriller) Star Wars: A New Hope (The epitome of Sci-Fi movies)

These may not be my favorite films or even the five films I think of the greatest of all time but these five I would say are essential films:
Casablanca Rashomon Raging Bull Annie Hall Breathless

Nobody's mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey? It's not one of my personal favorites movies, but I would put it at the top of my "movies everyone should see" list because the images and dialogue in the film have become part of the cultural ether, and also because it's so different from most mainstream films.

Citizen Kane (I am NOT a suck up) Psycho (in all honesty, this could have been almost any of Hitchcock's greats, like Vertigo or Rear Window) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (I had to pick a film that's pure fun and style and I think that I could watch this film everyday. My judgment might be clouded by my love of it, but I think I'm not wrong that this, or a film with a similar feel should be on the list) Taxi Driver I think there should be an animated film... Fantasia, I guess?
