Friend-of-the-show Jason Eaken put this out there on Facebook, and I was immediately intrigued.
Fifteen Artists
The Rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen Artists who've influenced you and who will ALWAYS STICK WITH YOU. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Quickly, and in no particular order.
Here's mine. What are yours?
1. Orson Welles (writer, director, producer, actor)
2. John Cassavetes (writer, director, actor)
3. Robert Duvall (actor)
4. Edward Hopper (painter)
5. Tom Waits (musician)
6. Jim White (musician)
7. Dashiell Hammett (author)
8. Fyodor Dostoevsky (author)
9. Matt Groening (writer, director, cartoonist)
10. Robert Altman (director)
11. Buster Keaton (writer, director, actor)
12. Dennis Miller (comedian)
13. C.S. Lewis (author)
14. David Mamet (writer, director, playwright)

John Coltrane (musician) Mark Rothko (painter) Stanley Kubrick (director) Kevin Shields (musician / producer) Leonard Cohen (musician / writer) Brian Eno (musician / producer) Ornette Coleman (musician) Joseph Heller (writer) Steve Reich (composer) Kurt Vonnegut Jr (writer) Teo Macero (music producer) Noah Lennox (musician) Philip K. Dick (writer) Daniel Lanois (musician / producer) Lars von Trier (director)
I'm a music guy rather than a film guy, as you can probably tell. It's sometimes tricky to single out individual names in music...

1. Stephen Fry (writer, actor, author) 2. Oscar Wilde (author, playwright) 3. Jimmy Pardo (comedian) 4. Kim Ki-duk (director) 5. Rowan Atkinson (actor, comedian) 6. Ricky Gervais (actor, comedian, director) 7. Derren Brown (illusionist, television presenter, entertainer) 8. Hiyao Miyazaki (director, animator) 9. Matt Damon (mostly actor, sometimes advocate) 10. Eddie Izzard (comedian, actor) 11. Michael Sheen (actor) 12. Thomas Hardy (writer) 13. Dashiell Hammett (writer) 14. Paul F. Tompkins (comedian) 15. Hirokazu Koreeda (director)
of course the list feels incomplete; but not just because people are missing, but also because I am, or at least feel, relatively young and yet-to-be-influenced, if that makes sense. I'm sure this list will have changed in several years. Really cool idea though!

Douglas Adams (writer) Nevil Shute (writer) George Orwell (writer) Jonathan Swift (writer) Alan Moore (writer) Miles Davis (musician) Jeff Beck (musician) Jimi Hendrix (musician) My old music teacher and later band member, without whom I wouldn't be into music the way I am. (musician) Ricky Gervais (comedian and whatnot) Richard Dawkins (scientist) Ryan Church (concept artist) Ralph McQuarrie (concept artist and illustrator) An old teacher of mine, without whom I wouldn't be drawing today. (illustrator and graphic designer) Geroge Lucas (director)
The two that aren't famous might even be the ones who in a way influenced me more. I also notice now that there's a lack of movie people here (although both Church and McQuarrie are big influances mainly because of their film work)
Also - Gerorge Lucas for no other reason than Star Wars.

1. Akira Kurosawa (Director) 2. John Ford (Director) 3. Sam Fuller (Writer/Director) 4. J. Michael Straczynski (Writer/Producer) 5. William Shakespeare (Writer) 6. John Wayne (Actor/Producer) 7. Lee Marvin (Actor) 8. Harrison Ford (Actor) 9. James Stewart (Actor) 10. Lawrence Kasdan (Writer/Director) 11. Richard Linklater (Writer/Director) 12. Ronald D. Moore (Writer/Producer) 13. Edward Burns (Writer/Director/Actor) 14. Alfred Hitchcock (Director) 15. Jeffery Katzenberg (Producer, Studio Exec.)
I may have broken the topic a bit putting Katzenberg on the list, as it is debatable that he an artist. Sometimes, though, artists need help from people like him to make their dreams a reality. Despite the fact that ever since he left Disney his studios haven't really done much (while he was with Dreamworks proper, most of the good films that came out of that I'd contribute more to Speilberg and, since the split, the only good thing to come out of Dreamworks Animation was "How to Train Your Dragon"), I spent a large part of my childhood watching the movies he help turn out. His role at Paramount in the early to mid 80s and at Disney in the late 80s, early 90s produced some great films. Also, every Star Trek fan (as I am) owes him some credit for the TOS film series, which he was influential in while at Paramount.
Other than that, the two lesser known names on that list are Straczynski and Moore, both of whom are mainly TV people, although Straczynski broke into movies with "The Changeling." Straczynski is there for "Babylon 5," namely planing out the entire, 5 year show prior to him even pitching the show, and Moore for his work on "Deep Space Nine" and "Battlestar Galactica."
Lastly, the Brothers Scott (Ridley and Tony) would be on this list, but I feel they are both too inconsistent to be in the top 15.

Frank Black - Musician (most famously of the Pixies, but I'm one of those weird people who prefers his solo work) Joss Whedon Grant Morrison (Comic Writer. His work is quite challenging, but often also has a sense of fun.) Kurt Busiek (Comic Writer, particularly his work on Astro City which opened my eyes to what great comic writing is) Alfred Hitchcock Roal Dahl (Author) Douglas Adams Alan Moore Sam Keith (Writer/Artist of the Maxx, which caught me at a very potent time in my life) Dave Foley/Bruce McColloch (Comedians. This is kind of a cheat, because when I was younger I was a Bruce man, but now that I've gotten older, I realized that while Bruce brings a unique vision, Dave Foley brings the strongest work to Kids in the Hall. It's really hard to choose) John Hodgman (Humour writer. Seriously, his work on the Daily Show is great, but his books are sublime) Jon Stewart Shigeru Miyamoto (the man who created the important Nintendo Games) Paul Dini (best known for writing the best episodes of Batman the animated series) Phil Hartman (God, now there was a man taken before he died. I think there were so many people who didn't know who he was until they realized there would be no more Lionel Hutz or Troy McClure.)

I can't deny it, there aren't a lot of women who have a stronge influence on me art wise. Had I discovered her sooner, maybe The Bird from the Bird and the Bee. If I was more into music, I might have included Yoko Kanno. But I can't. Can't defend myself here, just the way it is.
