I'm extremely apprehensive about this movie. I'm an ex-comic book collector (but we never really stop, do we?) and even though I'm more of a DC guy I do read the occasional Marvel collection. Cap Am is a bit of a blind spot of mine but I have to see every comic book movie just because, ya know?
I'm apprehensive because Joe Johnston doesn't have a very good track record and comic book movies rarely fall in the "it's pretty good" category. Mostly they're great (Spider-man 2, The Dark Knight, X-Men 1 & 2) or they stink (X3, Daredevil, Catwoman). I'm fearing Captain America and Thor both look very iffy from all I've seen so far.
That said, I'll probably go see it in the theater! I told you, you can't ever quit comics!

I'm not a huge Johnston fan myself, but I did enjoy The Rocketeer, which I think is sort of similar to Captain America, in tone if not story structure. I feel like it will have just the right amount of throwback and could be a very fun movie.

In my mind the only great super hero movies are the recent Batman movies and the first Iron Man and for one very specific reason: they had a voice. I get the feeling that there are too many people throwing around opinions (writers, directors, studios) for the films to have any personality. What your left with is often somewhat lifeless and while I’m not saying all super hero movies are bad, if studios didn’t feel the need to cater to anything other than quality we’d end up with a much more vibrant collection of comic book adaptations.
Captain America could be really wonderful if they’re able to pull it off. Its premise seems to promise a fun variation on the super hero genre. We’ll just have to wait and see.
And with regards to the first paragraph: feel free to correct me by throwing out some great super hero movies I’ve overlooked. I’ve gotta revisit X-2 and Spidermans 1 & 2 sometime soon but the original X-Men just isn’t good and what I’ve seen of Spiderman looked painfully awkward and dated. Though from what I remember X-2 is better than the original and I am hoping Spiderman actually does hold up in full. I’m really looking forward to re-watching both.

Spiderman 2 and X men 2 are in my opinion in the same leauge as dark knight x men 2 maybe not as much. A good sequel takes the hero established in the first movie and makes him question his decision. I also thought Iron Man 2 was also a great film in that right.

I do remember really enjoying the first two Spiderman movies but I was young when they came out and haven't really sat down and watched them since. Iron Man 2 isn't outright terrible but it just doesn't have the same energy that made the first one not good but great.
Captain America and X-Men: First Class both seem unusual enough (in their casting choices, plots, etc.) that they have the potential to become more than just-another-super-hero-blockbuster. Compare that to, say, the Green Lantern which (not that I'm not hoping otherwise) doesn't look incredibly original.

Dr Handsome, before you watch Spider-Man 1 and 2 again remember that they are far different films from the likes of comic book movies as they are right now. They only came out a few years back, but when you look at The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Kick Ass, and to an extent Iron Man they are a bit more mature and take things a bit seriously. Spider-Man is very much a comic book come to life. They're fun, vibrant and sometimes silly, but they are so good. Spider-Man 2 still captivates me.
Of course, I'm a Sam Raimi nut, so I may be a bit biased!

Well what felt awkward and dated in the really brief clip I happened to catch on TV were just the special effects and special effects don't necessarily break a good story. That is to say, there's no reason why it can't still be a great movie, I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I wish more movies took the comics-on-screen approach which leads right into this next topic.
I'll maybe save the X-Men: First Class thread for a later time but I'll say here that the casting choices are... interesting. Mostly in the good sense but I do get the feeling January Jones doesn't have the energy to play Emma Frost. It seems like they know they can't get away with just showing everyone's favorite super heroes on screen and are getting more creative with stories and premises.
