For the most part I think he can be really good the one film he did in his prime that I hate was crusing. Now I know alot of critics have bashed his late work, while I see parts that remind me of the great actor I have to admit his effort has wained or has seemed too.
But make no mistake he is to me the greatest actor ever, And justice for all, panic in needle park, devils advocate, heat, insomnia. I could go on and on.The only thing is why he only won one oscar is beyond me. But really I just want to see how the present has affected his legacy to movie fans.

He's obviously one of the greats. I think Dog Day Afternoon is probably his best performance. His only having one Oscar is not particularly important. I mean, the film he won it for was not particularly good. It was more of a 'It's time' Oscar I think. But that's how it goes for lots of actors and directors. Scorsese won for The Departed which is a fine movie but he should have won at least twice before.
I think Pacino has still put in some good recent work. He has never been as prolific as other actors because he enjoys returning to the stage. I liked his performances in films like Donnie Brasco, The Insider and Insomnia. I don't think he has done anything to tarnish his reputation. He hasn't been appearing in 2-3 crap movies a year for a decade like De Niro (although unfortunately Pacino is in a movie with Sandler and Holmes coming out that looks abominable).
Hopefully he does end up making this mob movie with De Niro and Pesci that Scorsese is meant to direct. It's kind of amazing he has managed to go a whole career without working with Scorsese.
