I noticed that this forum has yet to have a thread disscussing trailers so I thought I might as well start one seeing as they are a vital part of movies. So what kind of trailers do you like and not like? What are some of the crucial mistakes in trailers?
The one thing I would like to start off with is the over doing of trailers. Last night I saw yet another trailer for the new Harry Potter. The trailer was amazing but I feel it was completly unessacary. I think that people are aware that Harry Potter is coming and that people are already sold on wither or not they want to see it. I don't think people would saw a trailer and say "oh thats harry potter I should watch the series so I can see this one." All the studio is doing is throwing more money into marketing which is kind of pointless.
I also feel that trailers show too much as it is and that you can do a lot more then less. One of my favorite trailers of all time was the teaser for the dark knight. They didn't show a single peice of footage merely sound clips and they show the bat symbol. It set the tone for the entire movie and really made me want to see it and I'm not a big batman fan.

Remember though, you're the kind of person here that keeps up with film news websites, follows information for new films, etc. You're an 'active' film-goer.
The majority of people aren't, they're 'passive' film-goers, so trailers and tv ads are the only way they'll know when the new Harry Potter movie is coming out (repeating the trailer gets the release date fixed in your head too), and get them excited enough to see it in its opening week in 3d rather than missing it and waiting for dvd.

I love movie trailers. I think 80% of trailers are better than the film they're promoting. Yes, you read that percentage right. I even like trailers for films I like better than the films. For example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhgzIM-9lfAI like Iron Man, but this trailer, and even more so, the Teaser are awesome. Trailers are little short films capable of just as much art and technique as films themselves. One more: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVLvMg62RPADANG! That's great! SIDE NOTE: How the heck do I embed YouTube videos? I'm not well versed in this site enough to do it.

I can go either way on fan made trailers. It all comes down to quality. I've seen come amazing fan made film trailers ie mortal kombat rebirth, the legend of zelda, pokemon apcholospe, street fighter legacy. However I find that a lot of them are clearly shot in someones backyard using cheaply made costumes. I've even seen two kids make a dragonball trailer using no costumes at all. I tend to like the ones made from other clips because they useally have a good cinematic quality to them. Mason Glover is a good example of this.

On the topic of fan-made trailers I just wanted to mention that if it's made by kids I'd be willing to give that Dragonball trailer with "no costumes at all" a pass-- even if it's the video's just not very good. Because I think one of the nasty things that us people commenting on this stuff sometimes make a habit of doing (especially us film-goers who should know better) is quickly criticizing something that isn't necessarily trying to be some super polished cinematic masterpiece. Sometimes it's cool that someone bothered to pick up a camera and use it as a form of expression.
I mean, there are exceptions: anything crude or crass, something self indulgent or mean spirited-- there are reasons to say "wow, this is awful" but I think there are equally legitimate reasons to watch what you say.
That's all. Oh, and that trailer for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is something awesome!
