It's been a while, figured this might be the place to start posting again...
I was eager to respond to the whole of the opening. The thing is, my brother and I brought up a similar topic after having watched Game of Thrones: we'd both agreed that the first two episodes lacked any hook and were talking about how the writers seemed to be ignoring the idea of episodes, something which is not only part of the "format" of television but would have kept these episodes interesting while they saw to the tedious exposition. While I know a good writer can break this "episode" format, it seems like a bad idea when you're first two episodes don't make me want to see more of the show.
I think you're right about their reasoning too: it seems like their still saying "It's not TV it's HBO." We're way past the idea that television can't be just as compelling as film, just tell a good story instead of trying to convince us your show is above the medium.
Oh, and anti-authoritarian movies: that Apple commercial where the lady throws a sledgehammer at a giant TV.
