It hasn't been formally announced yet, but we're now accepting submissions for our listener-generated list of the 100 Greatest Directors. Simply e-mail the ten directors you think are the best to tyler@battleshippretension.com. Do not e-mail these to David; we want to stick to a single e-mail address. We'll be accepting submissions until September 25. Thanks.

Somehow I forgot to put Steven Spielberg in my e-mail! I'm sure he'll end up on the list, anyway.
When thinking this over and browsing directors lists (the Oscar nominated list on wikipedia in very interesting, for example), I realized there's tons and tons of great directors to make this list! There's also a few that I figure are shoe-ins for this list. I don't even need to name them...
My favorite list, yet, guys. But I'm obsessed with film directors, so I'm biased.

Does anybody have any predictions of who will take the #1 spot?

Uwe Boll.

Why make a prediction? I'd rather be surprised. I will say that on another forum we had a similar thing (top 50) and Alfred Hitchcock topped. Interestingly, Danny Boyle didn't even make the list.

Why make a prediction? I'd rather be surprised. I guess it's just my "Family Feud" instinct. I find it fascinating to speculate on how others think.

Oh, I do too, but I'd rather be surprised with the end result. If you ask for answers, the suspense might disappear.

I don't know the order but I wouldn't be surprised if the top ten consisted of:
Alfred Hitchcock Steven Spielberg Martin Scorsese Francis Ford Copolla Christopher Nolan Orson Wells Akira Kurisowa The Coen Brothers Woody Allen and Ridley Scott

If Christopher Nolan makes the top ten I'll firebomb the BP listeners houses.

@snobby as a Hobby - I'm hoping the list has some more surprises than that...
And I'm with Bouncing Brick on this one, I'm not that impressed with Nolan. Even though I like most of his films (though I think I may be the only person who really disliked Dark Knight), I feel like his strengths lie more in scripting than directing.

My problem with Christopher Nolan is in the tone of his films. He's so incredibly self-serious that even films that should be fun (Inception) end up being melodramatic. Would it kill the guy to smile once in a while and have that smile shine through in his films?
Plus, he seems more concerned with weaving a tight narrative than expressing any kind of human emotion. In other words, his films are very cold. I'm never quite moved by the end of films, I'm always impressed with how the story is told, but never affected on an emotional level.
He can make the top 100, I suppose, but top ten?!?! No way.

Here's a fun game! There is one specific director whose name has been submitted enough to be included on the final list and I'm furious about it. Try to guess who it is!

It has to be either Brett Ratner or Stan Brakhage.

Ug, Brett Ratner. Are there really BP listeners who would vote for him?

Great news! After compiling the list last night, I found that the director in question could be eliminated. He wound up being #102. As such, I can go ahead and tell you who it was. Zack Snyder. Thankfully, he's no longer on the list. Unfortunately, there is a director on there that, while very talented, has no business appearing on this list; at least not at this point in his career.

Oh, thank god. I'm losing all hope with Zack Snyder. I'm guessing the other one is Chris Nolan.

My guess for that director would be someone like Rian Johnson. Or someone else with a small filmography. He's someone who should be on the list...eventually. But that would be my guess, someone who hasn't got a big enough body of work.
