The Oscar nominations came out today. There was actually a fair number of surprises. I'll throw out a few thoughts, though you've undoubtedly seen them elsewhere.
Pleasantly surprised for Rooney Mara. She was, by far, the best part of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Happy for Gary Oldman got his first nomination this year.
Excited that Margin Call was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, though it did keep Win Win from being nominated.
Sad for Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, Michael Fassbender, and Albert Brooks.
It seems very silly that Extremely Loud... would be up for Picture. I also think that neither The Ides of March nor Hugo deserve to be nominated for screenplay.

Looking back 50/50 may have been my favorite movie of the year. I'm disappointed it didn't get any noms.
I did not like The Artist, but the academy seems to like movies about movies. The dog was the best part of the movie. The acting wasn't special. I think the academy gets a kick out of different types of movie like how Life is Beautiful and Crash won. Would The Artist even be considered among the best silent movies?
Additionally, Moneyball was a completely bland movie. I really liked the book and enjoy advanced stats and follow baseball but nothing happened. But I wonder if this is one of Brad Pitt's more likeable characters that he got a nomination? It's a straightforward character with few quirks, something that we rarely see from him, yet people seem to have responded to it the most. And I don't get Jonah Hill's nomination at all.
All in all I think Midnight In Paris may sweep. It was my 1A of the year. Comparatively, I think many of the films and performances cancel each other out and when you look at the rest MIP really stands out. (Owen Wilson is really good and may be the best at playing the Woody role, but I think he may have been overlooked in all the awards this year)
AND WHERE IS TABLOID FOR BEST DOC?

I like some of the nomations this year. It looks like the acadamy is branching out past just the artsy drama films. I like the fact that the girl from bridesmaids got nomiated. Will she win no but it's a nice gesture. A few of my predictions are hugo for best visual effects and man or muppet for best origional song. I can't believe there were only two this year. I don't know if it will win but kung fu panda 2 is my choice for best animated.
