So, it's looking like The Artist will win Best Picture this year, which will lead many to start disliking it (in some circles, this has already started). What did you think of The Artist? Not necessarily in terms of the Oscars, but in general?

I saw this movie a few weeks before the Oscars. I went in thinking that the film would be overblown and pretentious. I knew that there was a lot of talk about it and expected to see evidence of that hype on the screen. What I saw was a darling film that seemed to do everything right. I left the theater asking myself if it made sense that a silent film would and should win the 2012 award for best motion picture. Imagine the confusion historians will have explaining that win 200 yrs. from now (assuming we're all still here). However, good storytelling is good storytelling and The Artist had it. Having not yet seen The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, or Tree of Life, I can't say that I'm fully qualified to pick the film that should have won the award but of the ones that I saw, I would pick Hugo or The Artist. I think that both serve to re-inspire a love of cinema in the audience by hearkening back to a time when films were new and still being defined as a medium. My hope is that both films will cause more people to take a serious look at classic silent films and learn about the origin of films and the path that the industry took to the present. Again, I can't speak to any of the messages in Tree of Life, The Descendants, or Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close or their suitability as winners of the Best Picture Oscar over The Artist. Out of the films I did see, I probably enjoyed Midnight in Paris the most and The Help the least. I won't be purchasing any of the nominated films any time soon. But I tend to buy DVDs and Blu-Rays that I'm willing to watch over and over again, and ones that have the most extra content.
