This doesn't really mean much, but there was a poll on IMDb about the possibility of adding a Best Voice Acting category to the Academy Awards. I don't know if this is something that is legitimately being considered, but the poll came out with 41% of people voting "No." This seems frustratingly callous to the art of voice acting. I'm curious to know what you think about such a thing. Anybody that has taken the time to look into what is involved in voice acting knows that it can be incredibly difficult. But does that mean that it is worthy of its own Oscar category? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Anything that makes a significant contribution to the artistry of a film should have formal recognition. So voice acting deserves a category, as does stunt work. Unfortunately I don't think the academy cares about either of these things. As for the IMDb voters, anyone who's spent any amount of time on the discussion boards over there (as I have) knows that most of them have no idea what they're talking about.

I was surprised that this didn't go in when they made Animated Feature its own category.
Yeah, there definitely needs to be some recognition of voice actors, especially where the interaction of CG and human actors in film is becoming more prevalent.
Question, though: would this actually be 4 categories (2 leads, 2 supporting), 2 (male and female), or 1? Personally, I'd be happy with just the 1, but, at only 5 nominations, I think that would be seriously limiting.
Honestly, the reason why this hasn't happened yet is probably something stupid, like they don't want the telecast to run long.

You know when people describe something as a car crash that you can't bring yourself to look away from? That's the IMDb forums.
It is a creative contribution so it's certainly deserving of an award. I'm willing to accept that not every award has a place in a televised ceremony but that shouldn't stop the academy from recognizing talent and skill.

But, frankly, when they're trimming the show down to such an extent that they've even eliminated show stapes, such as live performances of the nominated songs, you know they're not going to be adding any new categories for quite a while.
